Cello

Amy Chang is the Acting Principal Cello of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra and Adjunct Professor at the University of Toledo. In addition to performing as a soloist and chamber musician with TSO, she has soloed in Taiwan, China, Japan, Canada, and the USA, including David Geffen Hall and Carnegie Hall with the Taipei Symphonietta, Evergreen Orchestra, Yin-Qi Orchestra, Taipei Contemporary Chamber Orchestra, Taipei Celebrity Chamber Group, Euodia Orchestra, and the International Music Festival Orchestra. She serves as an adjudicator for national competitions and auditions, and is frequently invited internationally to perform and to give concert lectures and master classes.
 
Amy began playing the cello at age 10. She attended a government subsidized music experimental program through middle school in Taichung City, Taiwan. During her high school, the Winnetka Rotary Club granted her a full scholarship to study as an exchange student in the USA; the Music Institute of Chicago also granted her a full scholarship to study with distinguished cellist, Nell Novak. In Chicago, Amy won first place in the St. Paul Musical Arts Competition. She continued her studies in the Eastman School of Music, where she received her Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Cello Performance. Upon graduation, Amy returned to Taiwan and performed extensively for several years, promoted avant-garde compositions by contemporary Taiwanese composers, and taught cello and chamber music at Soochow and Tunghai University.
 
Amy holds a deep gratitude for the teachers who have guided her to reach each of her life’s milestones, both in music and in her personal development. Her former teachers include Wu Bixuan, Pan Huihao, Zhang Meiling, Lin Xiusan, Nell Novak, Robert Sylvester, Allan Harris, Pamela Frame, Paul Katz, Zara Nelsova, and Steven Kates.
 
Outside music, Amy enjoys reading, writing, exercising, traveling and trying diverse cuisines.
