Our Suzuki Program

The Toledo Symphony Suzuki Academy provides a nurturing environment where young musicians develop musical skills, confidence, and creativity. Rooted in the philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, our program believes every child can achieve excellence with the right environment, guidance, and encouragement.

Through private lessons, group classes, listening, and family involvement, students learn not only to play an instrument, but to become thoughtful, curious, and lifelong learners.

In the tradition of violinist and pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki, we believe:

  • that all children can achieve excellence on a musical instrument
  • we teach music by ear first, just as young people learn language before reading.
  • we encourage students to listen to music - a LOT. Listening offers students a bigger vocabulary for musical expression.
  • we love having families involved in student learning. An adult who supports the student in their home learning is important to success.
  • we offer a positive environment and encouragement in our music lessons.
  • students take part in multi-level group classes, learning with and supporting one another.
  • our first goal is to support young people in their development as life-long learners with more kind and noble hearts.
  • music develops skill sets that go beyond our musical instruments and into every day life. We strive to develop those skills in every child we teach.
