When we began the journey to reimagine our organization as Live Arts Toledo, we knew we needed more than a new name and logo. We needed a unifying story—something that would carry meaning not only in our performance halls and classrooms, but in the hearts of everyone who calls this organization their own.
As part of the rebrand, Live Arts Toledo’s leadership invited our extended team members to help name the new mark that now appears alongside our logo. Our President, Zak Vassar, introduced the idea simply: if this symbol was going to represent us and our new identity, then its name and spirit should come from within.

The Ascent.
When I first saw the logo, my immediate thought was, “Those look like steps!” But “steps” alone didn’t feel quite right. To me, the mark suggests something more. Its three shapes are subtly connected, hinting at movement, progress, and continuous improvement. It represents ascension, yes, but more importantly, ascending toward something greater.
That’s why I proposed calling the mark “The Ascent.” I wanted a name that embraces all our creative disciplines and reflects the harmony between our music and dance programs. More than anything, I hoped it would symbolize our shared commitment to growth across the entire organization. That sense of balance and forward momentum is central to who we are.
Every day, I see this organization creating meaningful experiences through performances, classes, rehearsals, and programs that uplift our community. As we continue to grow and evolve, so will our connection with the region. By inspiring deeper involvement, we can share the joy of music and dance even further.
Live Arts Toledo brings together the Toledo Symphony, Toledo Ballet, Toledo Jazz Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony School of Music, and three Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras under one roof. The Ascent reflects that unity and celebrates what we all share —a drive to reach higher and inspire others through live performance.
The Ascent also resonates with this moment in our history. With the opening of the Toledo Center for Live Arts and the launch of our new brand, we are beginning our own ascent toward deeper engagement, greater accessibility, and a more vibrant cultural life for Northwest Ohio.
I feel incredibly grateful to be part of this team. Every day, I’m inspired by the performers, educators, and staff who bring Live Arts Toledo to life. My hope is that my work continues to inspire and amplify the passion our performers share with the community, while reflecting my own deep commitment to the mission of Live Arts Toledo.
As we move forward, The Ascent may serve as a symbol of what we can achieve together through the power of the live arts.
