SHOSTAKOVICH: Symphony No. 11 (“The Year 1905”)
War and revolution echo through the concert hall. Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture recalls Russia’s resistance during Napoleon’s invasion, building from solemn hymns to jubilant celebration. Pianist Sir Stephen Hough performs his own Piano Concerto, The World of Yesterday, a reflective work that looks back at a fading era with elegance and nostalgia. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 11, The Year 1905, closes the evening with vast orchestral forces and vivid musical storytelling, portraying protest, violence, and the tremors of revolution in Russia.
