VERDI: Requiem
The Toledo Symphony's Rita Barbour Kern Masterworks Series closes with Verdi’s monumental Requiem. Written in memory of Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, the work sets the traditional Mass for the Dead with music shaped by the dramatic force of Verdi’s operas. The Toledo Symphony joins the UMS Choral Union for a performance that rises from moments of quiet reflection to the explosive cry of the “Dies Irae,” where chorus and orchestra surge together with a sound that seems to shake the hall itself. It is music that confronts fear, hope, judgment, and mercy, bringing the season to a close on a scale few works can match.
