Toledo Symphony and Imagination Station to Celebrate "Music in our Schools" Month

Published Monday, February 27, 2023 12:00 pm

TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo Symphony is excited to once again announce a special collaboration with Imagination Station to celebrate Music In Our Schools Month. For the second year, during the month of March, various groups of Toledo Symphony musicians, faculty members, and students will present free activities at Imagination Station.

“There is so much overlap between music and science,” says Rachel Schultz, Vice President of Education & Community Engagement for TAPA. “What excites me the most about this partnership is the curiosity that is cultivated at Imagination Station. I think it’s a great reminder to young musicians that a part of finding your musical voice is experimenting!”

“When you listen to music, you don’t think about theory and formulas, you only hear the song,” says Carl Nelson, Chief Scientist at Imagination Station. “The cool part is how much science does play into creating beautiful music. We are so excited to partner with the Toledo Symphony to take a new scientific and fun look at music.”

TAPA and the Imagination Station have been collaborating on many projects over the past few years. Most recently, Imagination Station played a key role in the November 10, 2022 Young People’s Concert titled “The Evolution of the Instruments”.

Key performances and demonstrations this month include:

  • MARCH 3– Students from Start High School and Jones Leadership Academy of Business will perform a free recital at 3:30pm
  • MARCH 5–Students from the Toledo Symphony School of Music (TSSM) will perform a recital at 1PM.
  • MARCH 11 – TAPA will have a table at Girls Power! Including an instrument petting zoo and interactive dance station.
  • MARCH 25– Students from TSSM and TSYO will perform a recital at 1PM

“I am so thankful that Imagination Station invited us to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month by featuring the many different groups of music students we work with,” continues Schultz. “Many of these opportunities will be rather informal which will be great for the student performers and allow visiting families to stay and listen as long as they can!”

ABOUT TOLEDO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The Toledo Symphony Orchestra is a community-supported organization of professional musicians and teachers who deliver quality performance and music education for all.

Formed in 1943 as The Friends of Music and incorporated in 1951 as the Toledo Orchestra Association, Inc., the Toledo Symphony Orchestra (TSO) has grown from a core group of twenty-two part-time musicians to a regional orchestra that employs sixty-nine professional musicians who consider the Toledo Symphony their primary employer, as well as numerous extra players annually as repertoire demands.

On January 1, 2019, the Toledo Symphony and Toledo Ballet officially merged to form the Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA), a new non-profit organization dedicated to providing exceptional live music and dance performances and education for the region. This partnership promises to create new and invigorating programs, provide cost and revenue synergies in operations, and integrate the arts through shared educational missions.

The Toledo Symphony reaches more than 260,000 individuals annually through performances and education programs. The series concerts (Masterworks, Pops, Chamber) are the critical underpinning of the orchestra’s artistic mission and regularly draw people from 135 postal zip codes. Education programs, student performances, and community concerts are held in schools, neighborhood churches, performing arts centers, and community facilities throughout the region; many are offered at no charge or provided at a reduced fee to help expand participation.
