Alumni Event and Fall Concert Scheduled for November 8 & 9
TOLEDO, OH — Live Arts Toledo (formerly the Toledo Alliance for the Performing Arts) is proud to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras (TSYO)—a program that has grown from a grassroots ensemble in 1947 into a three-tiered training program for young musicians across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
The TSYO story began when DeVilbiss High School student Joseph Henry gathered friends who loved music. By 1950, the group became the official Toledo Youth Orchestras under Cecile Vashaw, later led by Kenneth Holland and Michael Miller. A second ensemble, the Toledo Junior Youth Orchestra, was added in 1978 to support younger musicians. In 2011, the ensembles joined the Toledo Symphony and rebranded as the Toledo Symphony Youth Orchestras, now comprising the Philharmonic Orchestra (Wasim Hawary), Symphonic Orchestra (Dr. Chad Hutchinson), and Concert Strings (Betsy Cranston and Kathleen Schnerer).
“It’s a privilege to be part of TSYO since 2001, and over the years I’ve seen thousands of talented students grow, perform, and connect through this program,” says Wasim Hawary, TSYO Artistic Director. “Students not only develop musically, but also form lasting relationships across schools and communities, making TSYO a true cultural bridge. This program fosters unity, creativity, and artistic excellence, and it’s inspiring to watch this vision flourish under one roof.”
Each season, students audition, perform side-by-side with Toledo Symphony musicians, and receive mentorship that builds both musical skills and lasting friendships. TSYO alumni include Alex Hanna, Principal Bass of the Chicago Symphony, and 2008 Olympic gold medalist Anna Tunnicliffe, with many others serving as educators in our region.
